What replaced Samsung Smart View?

Updated · 4 min read

Quick answer

Nothing replaced it, because it was never really removed — it moved. Smart View is no longer a separate app you download. On Galaxy phones it now lives in the Quick Settings panel, and the same job is also done by the SmartThings app.

What genuinely went away is the desktop Smart View application for Windows and Mac. There is no official replacement for that one, which is why searches for "Smart View download for PC" lead nowhere useful.

Where the feature actually is now

  1. Put the phone and TV on the same Wi-Fi. Same network, same band — not 5 GHz on one and 2.4 GHz on the other.
  2. Swipe down twice from the top of your Galaxy phone to open the full Quick Settings panel.
  3. Tap Smart View. If you cannot see it, tap the pencil or Edit and drag it into the panel — it is present but hidden on many phones.
  4. Pick your TV, then confirm Start now on the phone and accept on the TV if it prompts.

Why people think it was discontinued

Three separate things happened, and they get conflated:

What changedStatus now
Standalone Smart View app on Google PlayWithdrawn — the feature is built into the phone instead
Smart View for Windows / MacGone, no official replacement
Smart View on Galaxy phonesStill there, in Quick Settings
SmartThings appAlso does it, plus TV control

So if you searched Google Play for "Samsung Smart View" and found only third-party apps with unfamiliar names, that is why. The official one is not there any more because it does not need to be.

Be careful what you install from that search. Several third-party apps use "Smart View" and "Samsung" in their names to catch this traffic. One of the largest has over 38,000 ratings and averages 2.9 stars. Check the rating and the developer before installing anything.

The part Smart View does not solve: non-Samsung TVs

Smart View is designed for Samsung TVs, and also works with Chromecast devices. Point it at a TV from another manufacturer and results get inconsistent — which is the single most common reason people go looking for an alternative in the first place.

What works on essentially every smart TV, regardless of brand, is DLNA: instead of mirroring your whole screen, you hand the TV a file and it plays it directly. Full quality, no battery drain, and the phone stays usable while it plays.

For TVs Smart View will not talk to

SATV finds your TV over DLNA and sends photos, video, music and files to it — Samsung, LG, Hisense, TCL, Sony, Android TV and Fire TV. On Android TV and Fire TV it also installs apps from your phone.

Can a Samsung TV install apps from your phone?

No. Samsung TVs run Tizen, so Android APKs cannot install on them; can you install APK on a Samsung TV explains why and what to do instead, such as adding a Google TV stick and following how to install APK on Google TV. Casting still works for your own media over DLNA. If the TV does not show up, see screen mirroring not working.

Questions people ask

How do I get Samsung Smart View?

You do not download it any more. On a Galaxy phone, swipe down twice from the top of the screen and tap Smart View in the Quick Settings panel. If the tile is missing, tap Edit and drag it in.

What replaced Samsung Smart View?

On phones, nothing — it moved into Quick Settings and into the SmartThings app. The Windows and Mac desktop version was discontinued with no official replacement.

How do I get Smart View on my Samsung TV?

Nothing to install on the TV. Modern Samsung TVs accept Smart View connections by default; you start it from the phone. If the TV does not appear, check that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and band.

How do I screen mirror to my Samsung TV?

Quick Settings → Smart View → choose the TV → Start now. If it connects but the picture is black, that is copy protection in apps like Netflix and Disney+, not a fault — use the app's own cast button instead.

Why does Smart View keep disconnecting?

Mirroring sends a live video encode over the air, so it is sensitive to distance, interference and network congestion, and it drains the battery quickly. If you only want to watch one video, sending the file over DLNA is steadier and uses almost no power.
